Bread and Circuses

Reeves goes Roman

Sky News reports:

Earlier, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a temporary cut to VAT on some attractions, from 20% to 5%.

She said it was part of the government's Great British Summer Savings Scheme - which also includes free bus travel for under-15s in England across August.

Well of course this will help families but it smacks very much of that old Roman Emperor trick to keeps the masses in check: 'bread and circuses'.

I'm sure lots of under 15s will be lining up to take buses with all the oldies - that is if they can find one in a rural area.

Apparently Starmer said:

The measures were about supporting those who "worry at the end of the month [sic] cannot pay the bills".

So if you can't afford to pay your heating bills, no worries - let's all go to Thorpe Park for a rollercoaster ride!

Who dreamt this one up - some bright classics graduate on the Starmer team?

As Cliff might have sung: We're all going on a summer holiday. No more bus fares for a week or two.

Interesting?
