Privacy & cookies

The short version

This is a personal blog. There is no advertising, no third-party tracking and no analytics service. The site sets a few small first-party cookies to function, and keeps anonymous readership statistics that cannot be traced back to you.

Cookies

CookiePurposeLifetime
PHPSESSID Essential session cookie — keeps the site working as you move between pages (and prevents a page reload being counted as a second view). Until you close your browser
blog_voter Set only if you vote on a post — it remembers your vote so you can change or remove it, and prevents double-voting. It contains a random identifier, nothing about you. 1 year
blog_sub Set only if you are an email subscriber and confirm your subscription or open your personal subscriber link — it unlocks subscriber-only features (search, filters, AI commentary). It contains your subscription token, which is linked to your email address; it is not used for analytics. 1 year

Neither cookie tracks you across other websites, and no cookies are set by anyone other than this site. Because both exist solely to deliver things you ask for (browsing, voting), no consent banner is required — this notice is provided for transparency.

Readership statistics

When you view or vote on a post, the site records the post, the date and time, your browser type, the page that referred you, and your country. Your IP address is not stored: it is replaced immediately with a salted one-way hash, which lets the site count returning readers without being able to identify anyone or recover the address. The country is derived from the IP address at the moment of the visit and only the two-letter country code is kept.

This pseudonymised data is used solely to understand readership (which posts are read, from where) under the legal basis of legitimate interest. It is never sold or shared.

Email subscriptions

If you subscribe to the email digest, your email address is stored after you confirm the subscription (double opt-in) and is used only to send the digest. Every email includes an unsubscribe link; unsubscribing removes your address from the mailing list.

Hosting and sharing

The site is hosted by Hostinger, which processes data on this site's behalf under its own terms. Nothing collected here is sold, rented or shared with anyone else.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask what data is held about you and ask for it to be corrected or deleted. Note that the readership statistics cannot be linked back to you even on request, because no identifying information is kept. For anything else — including subscription queries — contact: tripos@vizimail.com.
