Ten Pence Each

Is that too much of a difference?

Sky News reports:

An 'ick' feeling around billionaires 'buying our democracy' - Unite union boss Unite general secretary Sharon Graham tells Sky News' chief political correspondent Jon Craig that trade unions giving money to the Labour Party is "very different" to the donations received by Reform UK.

Apparently, lots of Union members giving 'ten pence each' to a political fund, some of which is donated to the Labour party, is different from crypto millionaires giving multi-million pound donations to fund Reform.

But it's not and the Union boss is living in la-la land if she thinks it is.

They both have the same purpose - they are both supporting benevolent policies towards the source of the donations:

The Reform donors a 'benevolent' crypto policy if Reform gets in to government.

The Union donors a 'benevolent' workers-rights policy when Labour is in government.

There is no difference.

The only difference is scale.

You need a lot of 10ps to make up £72 million and that's getting even more difficult as Trade Union membership fell in 2024:

The proportion of UK employees who were trade union members fell to 22.0% in 2024, down from 22.4% in 2023. This represents the lowest union membership rate on record among UK employees for which we have comparable data (since 1995).
