Civilization and Democracy

The subterfuge of empires

Caitlin Johnstone has an interesting post on the differences between the British and American empires:

The US empire is a larger, stronger, sneakier, bitchier, less honest, more manipulative version of what the British Empire was. The British Empire told its subjects that they were the property of the King and must do as His Majesty commands. The US empire subjugates people by tricking them into thinking they are free.

The Brits relieved the 'natives' of their resources in the name of civilization backed up by the threat of redcoats and gunboats.

The Americans do the same in the name of democracy backed up by the threat of regime change and shock and awe annihilation.

Nothing changes.
