Devolution

Plays into the EU's hands

The Critic newsletter reports:

Fred de Fossard on why the EU hates the nation state.

The EU is at its heart hostile to the nation state. It is perfectly comfortable with regions and large cities taking greater political and legislative power from the nations in which they sit. Ultimately a city or a region is too small to challenge the European Commission, but it is large enough to take power and legitimacy away from a nation state. Indeed, that is exactly what the devolution drive has done to the United Kingdom in the last 30 years, as each devolved administration is now run by a separatist party which are agitating to leave the United Kingdom and return to the EU.

In essence, England is now surrounded by proto-EU states, an encirclement that is like a slow strangulation of Brexit but from within the UK itself.

Remainers will be rejoicing in the idea that devolution has come to mean the return of the EU with no further referendum necessary.

This is the reverse of the old city-states that were eventually amalgamated into a single country (like Italy).

Instead the modern-day equivelant of city states threatens to destroy nations.

The next thing will be to encourage Cornwall or Yorkshire to secede from England and the destruction of that UK will be complete!
