Sky News reports:

Spotify to add 'AI Persona' badges to flag AI-generated artists

Spotify said the move was to make the platform more "transparent" and was in response to users expressing concerns about seeing artists that seem human, but are in fact AI-generated.

It's really unbelievable and quite outrageous that Spotify has not been labeling AI-generated music more clearly from the start.

In fact what they should be doing is entirely separating 'human' music from 'AI' music because they are fundamentally different things.

There's nothing wrong with AI music per se it's just that it is derivative (of human artists) because it has essentially sampled all existing music out there in order to build new tracks of its own based on patterns established by human artists.

Deezer – a French streaming site for music – estimates that 60,000 fully AI songs are being uploaded to its site every day, over a third of all production.

In fact every AI track marketed and sold via Spotify and other streamers should be paying a 'sampling' fee to a payback-pot that is then re-distributed to the human artists on the platform as a royalty.

Even if that fee is only 1c per song, at 60,000 songs a day it soon adds up and is some compensation for all the past human effort that goes into the AI songs of the present.

Spotify and any other music streamers not clearly separating human from AI music and facilitating the payback of human music creators should be ashamed of themselves.
