Smoke Free Wood

The UK's barmy woodburner rules

The UK government pulled back from a ban on woodburners and instead created a bunch of daft rules that no-one can possibly comply with - based on what the energy saving trust says.

Wood burners are mostly used to burn wood and wood emits smoke.

Apparently everyone who burns wood is supposed to keep it for a year to dry out and then test each log with a moisture meter (c.£25) before burning it to avoid breaking emission rules.

One of the trust's recommendations for an alternative heating source is:

For example, electric heating can be considered a low carbon heating option as renewable energy sources are powering more and more of the electricity grid.

It may be a low-carbon option but electricity costs in the UK are among the highest in the world so as well as a rocketing electricity bill, replacing your traditional radiators with electric radiators will cost you a fortune.

But at least you are doing your bit for the German economy as they make lots of electric radiator products.

Heat-pump tumble dryers are also becoming mandatory but they don't like to be run in cold spaces (e.g. utility rooms or garages) so the best place for your new tumble dryer is in the living room, where it's usually warm, and preferably right next to your woodburner and under the telly on the wall.

For once Trump is right.

The UK's energy policies are barmy.
