It seems there are porkies being told everywhere these days.
The Critic magazine (Aug-Sept 2026) ran a story entitled Something Rotten in the Athenaeum in which the author - David Shipley - claims that a former chairman of the prestigious London club - Ann Limb - had lied about her academic qualifications given that she never completed her PhD and claimed an MA that doesn't exist.
If this is true then it beggars belief that plum jobs are being taken up without any proper vetting of the validity of the applicant's qualifications which, in the case of the UK, can be done via https://hedd.ac.uk/ (albeit not that easily).
NK News also reports:
The inclusion of six fabricated citations in an academic article by award-winning Korean studies scholar Aram Hur earlier this year did not constitute research misconduct, according to a statement from her university to NK News.
A Tufts University investigation into the nonexistent citations determined the article written by Hur, who holds the Kim Koo Chair in Korean Studies at the college’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, “did not constitute research misconduct,” executive director of media relations Patrick Collins said by email on Aug. 29.
So just what does constitute 'research misconduct' - making everything up or more than 6 fake citations?
Everyone is worried about AI 'hallucinating' when in fact it seems that it's good ol' regular humans who are leading in the hallucination stakes.
