Appeasement

The primrose path to the everlasting bonfire

There's been some rather ironic, if not plain stupid, talk about appeasement recently with regard to Russia and the Ukraine.

The BBC reports:

In Russia's 'blitz' of Ukraine, the question of appeasement is back

Gregory Meeks, a senior Democrat on the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, called Trump's strategy "weakness through appeasement".

Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on X that "appeasement never was a road to a just and lasting peace".

Quite right. Well done Meeks and Tusk - you hit the nail on the head.

This is exactly why no-one should have expected Putin to 'appease' NATO - an enemy alliance dedicated to combating Russia - when it tried to absorb Ukraine in order to deprive Russia of its Black Sea naval base and establish forward bases on the eastern border to facilitate a 'decapitation' strike on Moscow.

They are both right.

By appeasing NATO, Putin would have shown 'weakness' and taken Russia down a road that would never lead to a 'just and lasting peace' - for Russia.

But this seems to have escaped these numbskulls.

Either that or they knew Putin would never agree to appease NATO and merrily provoked a war that has killed far too many Russians and Ukrainians already.

Interesting?
