Marco Rubio’s state department recently explicitly announced the return of McCarthyism in the United States through a paper titled “Cuba: the Capital of 21st-century communism”, which explicitly lauds the tactics of “harsh government crackdowns against its domestic institutional organs – blacklists, McCarthy-era investigations and prosecutions, and a slate of anti-communist laws at both the state and federal levels” as a method of taking down a supposed “communist plot” led by Cuba.
How long before this morphs into the US-equivalant of the Ukrainian Myrotvorets website and the targeted assassinations begin?
Essentially this is the problem when governments include people with a known agenda - in this case regime change in Cuba - it's only expected that they will attempt to use their power-platform to carry out their agenda.
This is what happened under Biden with Blinken and Nordstream pipelines and now it's happening under Trump 2 with Rubio and Cuba.
The EU will undoubtedly be taking note of how it can jump on the back of this as the USA moves ever closer to the DNA of states like China or Russia - states that they routinely denigrate as 'authoritarian' and 'undemocratic'.
