In WW2, Hitler issued the infamous directive for the German troops to be 'ruthless' in action against any threat from the enemy population.
This directive gave permission to the Wehrmacht and its allies to carry out some of the worst atrocities against civilians in human history.
Hitler also gave a similar permission for the industrial extermination of the Jews resulting in the murder of millions of people.
Goebbels may have understood the power of propaganda but Hitler understood the power of permission.
Not everyone takes advantage of permission but some do and generally speaking, bad things happen as a result.
Take illegal immigration into the UK.
Successive UK governments gave permission to illegal immigration.
How? By not stopping the boats and turning them back, which they could easily have done.
By giving this permission for illegal immigrants to flood into the UK, the country is now dealing with the consequences and how some bad people are taking advantage of that permission being given both immigrants and those opposed to immigration.
Take the trans permission.
By giving a tiny minority of biological males permission to enter female spaces and compete in female sports, the result has been an erosion of women's rights and a mockery of women's sports.
Take the Gaza permission.
By giving Israel the permission to flatten Gaza irrespective of the human consequences, the world has destroyed international law and set a clear legal precedent for future conflicts.
Take the Ukraine permission.
By giving Ukraine permission to leverage right-wing Nazi hatred to shoot demonstrators and overthrow an elected government in the Maidan coup, the country has been invaded, split in two and permission given to intimidate, kidnap, incinerate and murder so-called 'separatists' in Eastern Ukraine.
The thing about permission is it's easy to give but hard to deal with the consequences.
First it needs to be clear that permission is being given - Hitler was very clear about this although not about the implementation of his 'permission'.
He knew that the people given permission, and who decided to use it, would use widely differing methods for executing the permission given.
But today we do not even acknowledge the permissions given - only dictators do that right? - to make it easier to evade responsibility for the consequences.
What successive UK governments should have done is issue a directive that said:
We are giving permission for boatloads of illegal immigrants to come to the UK and be dealt with at UK taxpayer expense.
But they didn't and we all know why.
Update following AI review:
Generally speaking, AI does not like references to Hitler as it seems to regard them as 'inflammatory'.
The point of the Hitlerian references is to give an extreme example of how very simple permissioning can lead to horrifying complex results.
Just to be clear: the other permissioning examples given have not led to anywhere near the number of deaths and atrocities as Hitler's permissions - it would be ridiculous to claim that!
But permissioning is a slippery slope as the Hitler examples from the past clearly show.
