Sanctions

OK if they apply to other nations

Sky News reports:

Israeli president says UK sanctions would be a 'grave miscalculation'

Israel's president has been speaking this morning ahead of the UK's expected announcement of sanctions on Israeli settlements in the West Bank, deemed illegal under international law.

He went on to say that sanctions "will directly harm – unfortunately – Palestinians, robbing them of business and employment".

"And, ultimately, it will undermine the interests and national security of freedom-loving nations."

He concluded: "Sanctions are not a solution. Dialogue is. I say to all foreign governments: Stop! Step away from the dead-end of sanctions and boycotts. And turn toward constructive dialogue and toward cooperation."

Apparently sanctions are OK when applied to Iran, Russia and a host of other countries but not when applied to Israel.

But what is odd is that the threat of sanctions against Israeli settlers is really just a minor sideshow given the events in Gaza.

It all smacks of 'we have to do something' so let's find something minor to make a major fuss about.

This is hypocrisy of the highest order.
